The World’s Laziest Turtle Lives in the Cambodia’s Mekong River

Deep in the slow-moving waters of Cambodia’s Mekong River lives a creature so still and secretive that for years, many believed it had vanished forever. Known as the Asian Giant Softshell Turtle (Pelochelys cantorii)—or សត្វកន្ធាយក្បាលកង្កែប (also called ល្មិច) in Khmer—this gentle giant is one of the most unique and mysterious reptiles in the world.

Once thought to be extinct in the Cambodian portion of the Mekong, hope was rekindled in 2007 when conservationists rediscovered the species along a 48-kilometer stretch between Sambo District in Kratie Province and Siem Bouk District in Stung Treng Province. It was a moment of quiet triumph for Cambodia’s wildlife conservation community—and a powerful reminder that nature still holds surprises.

This turtle, often called the world’s “laziest,” spends nearly 95% of its life buried motionless beneath the sandy riverbed, perfectly camouflaged. Its wide, soft shell lies flush with the river floor, hiding a body designed for ambush. With a sudden burst of energy, it snaps up unsuspecting fish or small aquatic animals that swim too close. And then—stillness again.

Even breathing is minimal. The turtle surfaces just twice a day for air, making it one of the most energy-efficient creatures in the animal kingdom. But this still, silent life isn’t just for show—it’s a brilliant survival strategy.

Sadly, this ancient species is now Critically Endangered, facing threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and illegal hunting. The few remaining in Cambodia rely on the health of the Mekong and the protection efforts of local communities and conservation groups who are working tirelessly to ensure their survival.

Spotting one in the wild is like catching a glimpse of living history—rare, beautiful, and humbling. The Asian Giant Softshell Turtle isn’t just a fascinating animal; it’s a symbol of Cambodia’s natural resilience and the quiet wonders hidden beneath its rivers. So next time you’re near the Mekong, take a moment to wonder what ancient secrets may lie just beneath the sand.
